Fysicly Fit has a nice little group of boutique fitness studios. I've peeked into the ones in Seal Beach and Naples. Driven by the downtown location - not sure if it's open yet.

UPDATE: Fysicly Fit, it seems (according to the local newspaper), is the subject of some controversy. The owners have apparently skipped town with the investors money, leaving the Pilates trainers high and dry. If you feel like supporting the 'little guys', I read that the Seal Beach location has been taken over by the personal trainers and is still open. The other locations are now closed.

UPDATE: The Naples Island studio has been renamed "Naples Fitness Studio" (562) 342-6539.

We had a lot of fun and lived right across the street from this place: Mecca: an intoxicating combination of pilates, gyrotonic and spa. The first time I saw GYROTONIC in action was just up the street from Mecca at a place called Timberline. Timberline closed while we were in Austin, and it looks like they moved the GYROTONIC program to Mecca. Interesting.

My conclusion - no excuses, there are plenty of good Pilates mat classes available in the South Bay. My three favorite mat rooms are YogaWorks (Newport), 24hr Fitness/Warner (Huntington Beach) and LA Fitness in North Long Beach. Omadawn Yoga Studio in Seal Beach has a suberb room, but they do not offer Pilates mat, mostly hatha-derived yoga. Could be an opportunity there for a mat instructor.

They have two trainers. One was certified with Jennifer Kriess "Ab-solutions" and the other with Body Arts and Sciences International. Their private studio is cozy.

KROW, in addition to a line of the vintage Nike (re-issues) fashion, has some interesting 'Travel Trainer' shoes that active girls would like. Various casual items at Miyamo Clothing Boutique.

Speaking of Nike, Nike has a line of yoga/pilates activewear for women. The Nike Store at Fashion Island in Newport is where you'll find it all. You can buy yourself a Nike/iPod shoe and an iPod right next door at the Apple store. Nicole, who runs a Pilates studio on Balboa peninsula in Newport digs the Nike wear - and she carries a line of Pilates clothing in her own studio.

The American Apparel store on Main in Huntington has some great Racerback beater-Ts, in a wide variety of colors.

Two More SouthBay Studios Viewed

In my travels and research of Pilates in the Los Angeles region, today I took a quick look at two more studios. First off, YogaWorks is expanding rapidly, with 5 studios in Orange County alone. They have a few Pilates mat classes interspersed with their hatha-oriented Yoga (Astanga, Viniyoga, Anusara etc). The closest YogaWorks to Long Beach is on Main Street just off PCH in Huntington Beach. I haven't seen that one yet, today I toured the Newport Beach location which is about 1 block from Fashion Island. Their equipment studio appears to have a single reformer and trapeze (I only peeked) and is Balanced Body (wood machines).

I also peeked in the door to Escape Pilates, which is on Old Newport Blvd just off the 17th Street shopping district in Costa Mesa.

What is unique about Escape Pilates is their spa-approach to marketing Pilates. Private pilates is fairly expensive, so it makes sense to fold it into an offering of services aimed at 'pampering'. Usually, one feels great after Pilates, albeit a different kind of 'feeling great' than massage.

Not a Graphic Designer

I'm not what you would call a graphic designer. Going back, I'd say my expertise in this field lies along the lines of what we used to call a UI (user-interface) designer or interaction designer. Also termed instructional design (which encompasses a wider variety of media than the web). Of course, this is something of a hobby.

Group Class Experience on the Tower of Power

One time when I was in San Francisco studying at sfgyrotonic.com, I saw an amazing photo of Debra Rose doing this wild maneuver on the Gyrotonic Pulley Tower that was out of this world. She had one foot in each handle, and was arched with one hand on the bench. Today I dropped in to see Pilates by the Sea, which is also on Balboa Island in Newport Beach. It's a small, more intimate studio, generally my kind of place, except for 360 mirrors. Once I check my email I'm off to visit OnCenter Conditioning, which is home both to a Pilates studio and a teacher training/certification program.

Here's another one in the area; obviously, not going to tour that.

Update: so I dropped by OnCenter Conditioning, and, guess what? Nobody home. I waited around for about 10min, and just as I was about to leave a Pilates trainer came in and gave me a brief lowdown on the training... long enough for the receptionist to return. She gave me the complete scoop on their certification program, and long enough for... the founder of OnCenter, Rael, to come by. So I got a chance to meet him and discuss with him his approach to the Pilates method and their program. Definitely a nice studio. It's on the top floor of an office tower on E 17th Street in Costa Mesa. A great view.

Most Inspiring Pilates Studio in the South Bay, so far

In my travels, I've had a chance to see a wide variety of Pilates and Gyrotonic studios. Without a doubt, as far as high-end studios go, Body Design in Newport Beach is an awe-inspiring example of how amazing a studio of this kind can be. Don't let the web site fool you. Standing in a panoramic glass room with an ocean view, surrounded by Balanced Body reformers, I experienced a new level of wow.

Pilates Group Reformer Classes in Long Beach

Pilates group reformer classes are something I am familiar with. I spent a week at Polestar Pilates in Miami taking Allegro group reformer classes at a facility designed expressly for that purpose.

In my review of Pilates studios in and around Long Beach, it is my opinion that the best facility for taking group reformer classes is Long Beach Dance Conditioning, on Wardlow road (northward). They stage their group reformer classes on professional Balanced Body wood reformers which have been outfitted with color coded springs (as per the Allegro model). The room itself is serene and has a very nice atmosphere.

John Garey's studio near the south edge of Long Beach would be a runner up. He is using STOTT combo machines, which opens up some possibilities.

As far as trainers go, I like to evaluate trainers based on their background primarily, because one's background/knowledge/experience has an important influence on the class experience. In this case, I think Eden Paul, who teaches both at Gold's Gym and John Garey's facility, has a unique background in the world of Pilates, which generally tends to dominated by dancers. If you are fitness-oriented, rather than dance-oriented, check out Eden's classes.
